Christo & Jeanna-Claude Running Fence at 50

Christo & Jeanne-Claude: Running Fence at 50 celebrates the enduring legacy of one of the most ambitious and iconic works of environmental art in history. Installed in 1976, Running Fence stretched 24.5 miles across the rolling hills of Sonoma and Marin Counties, transforming the landscape with billowing white fabric that moved with the wind and light before meeting the Pacific Ocean.

Marking the 50th anniversary of this monumental project, the exhibition explores the vision, scale, and community collaboration behind Running Fence. Through photographs, preparatory drawings, correspondence, and archival materials, visitors gain insight into Christo and Jeanne‑Claude’s creative process and the profound connection between art, place, and people. The exhibit honors not only a groundbreaking artwork, but also Sonoma County’s unique role in a moment of global art history that continues to inspire generations.
